The Future of Money is Now

University of Toronto to host thought leaders in a special forum
about the future of currency.

Toronto, ON (April 25, 2022) – The University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs& Public Policy, together with sponsors from across the financial sector, will host The Future of Money (#theFOM22), a compelling event to consider how new digital currency is rapidly changing businesses, governments, and society at large.

On May 19, 2022, The Future of Money will bring together more than 30 of North America’s prominent thought leaders, public officials, and captains of industry — representing a wide cross-section of the financial services ecosystem including banks, financial technology companies and government officials. Participants will take part in a free-flowing, closed roundtable discussion on the future of money, with the aim of developing policy recommendations for inclusion in a white paper authored by the Munk School’s Innovation Policy Lab, as well as to define the discussion themes for the ticketed keynote panel event later in the day.

“Money is changing. Digital currencies provide both far-reaching potential for global growth, stability and prosperity, but also massive regulatory challenges,” said Peter Loewen, Director of the Munk School. “Thank you to our many partners for sharing in the vision of the Future of Money event and encouraging open discussion about the complex societal opportunities and challenges this presents.”

The keynote panel, featuring six of the thirty industry leaders, will be moderated in front of a live audience at Koerner Hall. The first 500 ticketed attendees will be offered a unique The Future of Money NFT (non-fungible token) to download.

“The Future of Money event represents the first time a collection of bankers, fintech representatives and wealth management executives will sit together at a table and openly discuss the future of money, its impacts and its broad consequences,” said John Nicola, Chairman & CEO of Nicola Wealth. “The discussion with this knowledgeable and experienced panel has the potential to shape, transform and reinvent both currency and commerce at a fundamental level.”

The Future of Money event is an opportunity to explore broad-reaching ideologies surrounding the benefits, opportunities, challenges, and risks, for both private and public interests, in adapting to rapidly evolving forms of digital currency and monetary technologies.

The live keynote panel will feature an impressive line-up of notable industry professionals:

  • Peter Loewen, Director, Munk School (panel moderator and participant)
  • Max Bardon, Head of Worldwide Payments, Amazon
  • Edward Kholodenko, CEO & Founder, Questrade
  • Jaime Leverton, CEO, Hut 8
  • Neil McLaughlin, Group Head, Personal & Commercial Banking, Royal Bank of Canada
